Village fair cancelled again

Understandably this year’s Skateraw Fair in Newtonhill has been cancelled. It is the third time there has been no event since it began in the early 1970s.

It was cancelled last year because of the pandemic … but who else remembers why it was cancelled the first time? It was 1978 and the fair would have clashed with the World Cup final in Argentina. Unfortunately Scotland didn’t progress to the final as expected by Ally’s Army, missing out on progressing through the tournament becuase of goal difference.

The fair organisers posted: “Sadly, we have had to decide to cancel (or not organise!) the 2021 Skateraw Fair since there is no guarantee that we would be able to hold such an event in June. If it is at all possible for us to organise an event of any sort later this year, we will try to.”

The way the fair used to be …
