Proposals on increasing biodiversity in some of our open spaces are among the reports coming to the next meeting of the council’s Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee.
This would see more grass meadows and the planting of wildflowers, bulbs, orchards, shrubs and trees. There are various sites in Portlethen, Newtonhill, Maryculter, Lairhillock and around the area included.
If approved by councillors on Tuesday, Landscape Services will continue to discuss the proposals with community groups and schools.

Need to be careful how they manage these sites. I live at the top of Dunvegan Place in Portlethen and the mowed green area there is full of Dandelions. When they seed the seeds are airborne into peoples gardens and causing problems with weeding as they are not easy to get rid off and I for one use chemical weedkillers as a last resort. I now see them growing in the pavement and alongside kerbs which gives additional and unnecessary work.
Judging by the landscaping teams efforts on Portlethen roundabout and the weed infested unmown areas around town they shouldn’t bother as there seems to be a total lack of horticultural knowledge over what constitutes a weed. Making the place look scruffy is not the object of biodiversity, it’s attracting wildlife with active efforts to grow nectar rich plants and food sources for birds and small mammals.
