Great news! I have just been advised by Aberdeenshire Council Roads Service that Hunter Construction (Aberdeen) Ltd has been awarded the Portlethen, Newtonhill and Muchalls carriageway patching contract.
We have been waiting for quite some time for this to happen. Our roads are in sore need of attention.
The Roads Service is awaiting a start date from the contractor and once this is available, I will share the news.
I’m told that patching means cutting out an area greater than the pothole and reinstating at least two layers of bitmac. Filling the pothole is just putting in some tar and running a roller over it. The patches are more durable than just filling the hole.
Hunter Construction was recently awarded a similar contact for the Stonehaven area by the council.
Surely some roads are in need of total resurfacing, or is it just patching that’s on offer due to the costs?
Where a section of road needs resurfacing, then that will happen. A good example is Old Mill Road in Newtonhill near the railway bridge. As well as being potholed, the surfacing is failing in general, so resurfacing as appropriate. £30,000 was earmarked for the work to be carried out in this financial year.
However, patching is often more appropriate and cost effective. No point in resurfacing all of a road when it is simply one pothole that’s the problem.
Is the C5K East of Cowford to the Crossroads at Banchory Devenick included for pothole repair. There are two bad patches of holes one of which I reported in March. It was considered a priority then.
Banchory Devenick isn’t covered by the Portlethen/Newtonhill/Muchalls contract. Work has been undertaken in the country areas by the Roads Service with potholes being repaired and in some areas roads receiving surface dressing to give a good seal. As you have reported the pothole in question it will be on the list for attention. The challenge is there are so many potholes it takes time to attend to them.
I hope the road to Downies Village is on your list for repairs? 2 massive holes which are definatley a lot worse than when reported earlier this year.
It’s not my list … the contract list is drawn up by the Roads Service. My understanding is that the patching contract is for Portlethen, Newtonhill and Downies. Work has been going on in the rural areas over the past months filling or patching potholes and carrying out surface dressing. As the Downies Road potholes have been reported previously they will be on a list for attention.
