The signal box at the former Newtonhill station is being demolished by Network Rail Scotland. A nearby bothy has also been knocked down. Both were no longer in use.

What a pity something so unique has succumbed to demolition. Its somewhat sad that the rail company could not have done something to retain the history. I stood on the opposite side of the railway today and it just looks a real mess. So disappointing.
At least the signalling equipment has gone to a good home with the Ferryhill railway heritage society.
The local authorities are always so eager to award listed status to, ie; a public toilet building from the 1960s, but not to a structure from the 19th century.
The listing of buildings is undertaken by Historic Environment Scotland, not local authorities. https://www.historicenvironment.scot/advice-and-support/listing-scheduling-and-designations/listed-buildings/search-for-a-listed-building/
However although I agree it would have been nice to have retained the signal box, Network Rail said that this was not possible as it was too close to the live rails. Pity.
